Molybdenum-Bearing Low-Carbon ASTM A312 TP316L Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe for Chemical Industry
ASTM A312 TP316L stainless steel seamless pipe (UNS S31603) is a molybdenum-bearing, ultra-low-carbon austenitic alloy designed for chemical service where both chloride resistance and weldability are critical. The 2–3% molybdenum addition significantly improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion compared with 304, while the carbon content is capped at 0.03% to prevent chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding. This prevents intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone without requiring post-weld solution annealing—a major advantage for field-fabricated chemical piping. The seamless manufacturing route eliminates longitudinal weld seams, removing the most common initiation site for corrosion and fatigue failure under thermal cycling. The pipe is supplied in the annealed and pickled condition with a clean, uniform surface.

TP316L seamless pipe is used in chemical reactor piping, heat exchanger tubes, acetic acid and sulfuric acid transfer lines, pharmaceutical process lines, desalination plant piping, flue gas desulfurization systems and marine chemical tanker unloading lines.
Ultra-low carbon eliminates weld sensitization. No chromium carbide formation at grain boundaries means the heat-affected zone retains full corrosion resistance without post-weld heat treatment. Molybdenum resists chloride pitting. 316L withstands chloride-bearing chemical media that would attack 304. Seamless construction removes the weak link. No weld seam means no preferential corrosion path under thermal cycling and pressure fluctuation.
The pipe functions as a pressure-retaining conduit and corrosion barrier, transporting aggressive chemical media while maintaining structural integrity under thermal expansion, vibration and internal pressure.
Store horizontally on wooden supports. Cut by abrasive saw or lathe; bevel ends for welding. Use ER316L filler wire with argon purge for root pass. Post-weld pickling restores passivation. No stress relief required for service below 400°C.
Prevent carbon steel contact to avoid iron contamination. Avoid chloride-rich media above 60°C, which can cause stress corrosion cracking even in 316L. Do not use hydrochloric acid cleaners.
Standard sizes ship 15–20 days after deposit. Custom diameters and wall thicknesses add 7–10 days. Ports: Qingdao, Shanghai, Tianjin.

Hexagonal bundles with steel strapping, end caps, moisture-proof wrapping, fumigated wooden pallets or crates. Labels show grade, size, heat number and length.
