INTRODUCTION
Silicon carbide, chemical formula for SiC, is made of quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), wood chips (adding salt for green silicon carbide production) and other raw materials, then smelting in a resistance furnace at high temperature, and it can also be called electrolon sand or refractory sand. Silicon carbide is divided into two kinds: black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide, are hexagonal crystal, specific gravity is 3.20~3.25g/cm3, Mohs hardness of silicon carbide is 9.5.
PROPERTIES
Black silicon carbide is a hard, sharp, and highly durable abrasive material. It exhibits excellent thermal conductivity, high-temperature strength, and low thermal expansion. Its unique crystal structure gives it outstanding resistance to wear and deformation. Black silicon carbide is also highly chemically stable, making it ideal for use in harsh chemical environments.
APPLICATION
· Defense: SiC is used in armor and blast-protection applications due to its high hardness and strength.
· Chemical processing: SiC can be used in chemical reactors and heat exchangers due to its corrosion resistance and high-temperature stability.
