INTRODUCTION

Silicon carbide, chemical formula for SiC, is made of quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), wood chips (adding salt for green silicon carbide production) and other raw materials, then smelting in a resistance furnace at high temperature, and it can also be called electrolon sand or refractory sand. Silicon carbide is divided into two kinds: black silicon carbide and green silicon carbide, are hexagonal crystal, specific gravity is 3.20~3.25g/cm3, Mohs hardness of silicon carbide is 9.5.

PROPERTIES

Black silicon carbide has a hardness of 9.5 on the Mohs scale, making it one of the hardest abrasive materials available. It also has excellent thermal conductivity, which allows it to dissipate heat quickly during grinding or cutting operations. Black silicon carbide is chemically inert and does not react with most chemicals, making it ideal for use in harsh environments.

APPLICATION

·Food processing: SiC can be used in food processing equipment due to its hardness, wear resistance, and chemical inertness.

·Water treatment: SiC-based membranes can be used for water filtration and desalination due to their high flux and chemical resistance.

·Oil and gas: SiC can be used in oil and gas drilling and production equipment due to its wear resistance and high-temperature stability.

·Automotive: SiC can be used in engine components, such as valve lifters and turbocharger rotors, due to its high temperature and wear resistance.

·Semiconductor inspection: SiC is used in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) systems as a specimen holder due to its low thermal expansion coefficient and thermal conductivity.
