The brake is the core component of the electrode slipping system in submerged arc furnaces (SAF), responsible for clamping or releasing the electrode, cooperating with the slipping cylinder to complete the downward feeding of the electrode. Its performance directly affects the reliability of electrode slipping, furnace condition stability, and smelting power consumption.

 

I. Introduction

The brake is a mechanical device in the electrode slipping system of SAF used to clamp or release the electrode. It is usually arranged in pairs (upper brake and lower brake) and driven by hydraulic or pneumatic power to achieve electrode clamping and release.

II. Main Functions
1. Clamping electrode: Holds the electrode during normal smelting to prevent slipping
2. Cooperating with slipping: Works with the slipping cylinder to complete step-by-step downward feeding of the electrode
3. Safety protection: Emergency clamping in abnormal conditions to prevent electrode falling

III. Working Emvironment

High temperature, dust, strong electromagnetic field environment, requiring the brake to have high temperature resistance, wear resistance, and high reliability.

IV. Classification of Brakes

According to drive mode, SAF brakes are mainly divided into the following types:

  • Airbag Brake: Airbag brake uses compressed air to inflate the airbag, causing the brake shoe to clamp the electrode. It is usually used in combination with the hydraulic lifting system .
  • Hydraulic Brake: Hydraulic brake uses hydraulic cylinder to drive the brake shoe to clamp the electrode, enabling electrode slipping under power, and is currently the mainstream choice for large SAF .
  • Disc Spring Brake: Disc spring brake uses disc springs to provide clamping force, and the hydraulic system provides release force. This is a normally closed safety design. Even if the hydraulic system loses pressure, the disc springs can still maintain clamping to prevent electrode falling .
  • Hydraulic Belt Brake: Hydraulic belt brake uses hydraulic drive to tighten a steel belt around the electrode, suitable for large-diameter electrode slipping systems .
