1. Introduction

The water-cooled protective cover is a key protective component of the electrode system in submerged arc furnaces (SAF). Installed at the lower part of the electrode, it isolates high-temperature furnace gas and thermal radiation, protects the electrode bottom device from burning, and removes heat through circulating cooling water to ensure stable operation of equipment under high-temperature conditions. The water-cooled protective cover is a key protective device in the electrode column of SAF, installed at the bottom of the electrode to protect the electrode bottom device from high-temperature furnace gas and charge, ensuring normal operation of the electrode column.

 
2. Functions
  1. Thermal protection: Isolates high-temperature furnace gas (1000-1500℃) and thermal radiation to prevent electrode equipment burnout
  2. Cooling: Removes heat through circulating cooling water to reduce equipment temperature
  3. Guidance and support: Provides guidance for the electrode to ensure vertical operation
  4. Insulation isolation: Prevents arcing between electrode equipment caused by large current and strong magnetic field
3. Working Environment
Located in the high-temperature zone of the furnace mouth, withstands 1000-1500℃ high-temperature furnace gas, thermal radiation, and strong electromagnetic fields. It is one of the most severely stressed components in SAF.

4. Classification of Water-Cooled Protective Covers

Based on structural form, cooling method, and manufacturing process, SAF water-cooled protective covers are mainly divided into the following types:

4.1 Classification by Structural Form

Split Type Protective Cover Composed of two or more arc segments connected by flanges and bolts to form a ring; detachable structure Advantages: Easy installation and maintenance, partial replacement possible.
Disadvantages: Many welds, poor sealing, prone to water leakage.
Integral Full-Circle Protective Cover Inner and outer walls are rolled and welded from single steel plates into a cylindrical structure; integrally formed Advantages: High structural strength, few welds, good sealing, long service life.
Disadvantages: Relatively complex installation and maintenance.
Double Water Jacket Structure Inner and outer double water jacket structure forming two independent cooling circuits Advantages: Good cooling effect, good electrode guidance, long service life.
Disadvantages: Complex structure, high cost.

4.2 Classification by Installation Position

4.3 Classification by Cooling Method

S-Shaped Water Channel Type Vertical and horizontal baffles inside forming an S‑shaped circulating water channel; cooling water circulates from the bottom high‑temperature zone to the top low‑temperature zone Good cooling effect; water flow direction matches temperature gradient; high heat exchange efficiency.
Independent Water Channel Type Multiple independent water channels arranged in the annular space; each channel has its own inlet and outlet Uniform cooling; local failure does not affect the whole system; easy maintenance.
Mixed Water Cooling Type Independent water channels and mixed water cooling zones arranged alternately; water flows upward in a serpentine pattern Combines the advantages of both water channel types; high cooling efficiency; compact structure.
