1. Product Overview
Nomay Black PET High Temperature Tape combines black polyester film with single-sided silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive for heat-resistant masking, visual identification and selected light-blocking applications.
Common purchasing names include black polyester masking tape, light-blocking PET tape and black PET silicone tape. The product can be supplied as slit rolls or drawing-based die-cut parts for electronics, optical-component assembly and industrial coating processes.
The black appearance supports concealment and visual contrast. Required light transmission, reflectance and electrical performance must be matched to the selected construction.
2. Product Construction
Backing: Black heat-resistant PET polyester film.
Adhesive: Silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive.
Adhesive side: Single-sided.
Appearance: Black; matte or gloss finishes subject to model confirmation.
Formats: Self-wound rolls, liner-backed rolls, strips and custom die-cut frames or masks.
The exact black-film construction, surface treatment and liner must be confirmed for optical or contamination-sensitive applications. Do not assume a particular pigment, primer or coating arrangement without the construction specification.
This is a PET film tape. It is not a foam cushioning tape, and black color alone does not establish conductive or antistatic performance.
3. Available Specifications
For constructions within Nomay's confirmed colored PET film and silicone adhesive family:
Thickness range: 0.012–0.1 mm; thicker constructions can be requested.
Width range: 0.1–1250 mm.
Roll and master-roll length range: 33–3000 m.
Peel adhesion range: 5–1500 g, with test conditions to be confirmed.
Temperature resistance range: 180–220°C, matched to the selected construction and process.
Color: Black.
Confirm whether the quoted thickness refers to the PET backing or finished adhesive tape. Finished tape thickness includes the backing and adhesive, excluding any removable release liner.
The supplied peel-adhesion range uses g notation. Confirm the force-unit convention, specimen width, substrate, peel angle, speed and dwell time before comparing values.
Not every dimension and performance combination is available in one construction. Additional optical coatings, ESD treatments or composite layers require separate specification review.
4. Key Features and Buyer Benefits
Light Blocking and Concealment
Selected black constructions reduce unwanted light transmission and conceal underlying components. Specify the required wavelength range and transmission or optical-density limit.
Matte and Gloss Options
Matte versions can support reduced surface glare. Gloss versions provide a different surface appearance. Select the finish against the actual lighting and inspection conditions.
High-Temperature Masking
The PET and silicone adhesive construction supports suitable coating, baking and electronic-processing operations within the confirmed temperature profile.
Dimensional Stability
The film supports controlled placement and consistent die-cut geometry. Evaluate shrinkage and curl after heating where alignment is critical.
Controlled Removal
Selected grades support removal after validated processing, helping reduce cleanup. Residue and film integrity depend on the substrate and complete exposure conditions.
Custom Converting
Strips, frames, discs and shaped masks support localized light shielding and repeatable process protection.
5. Optical Performance and Surface Finish
Light blocking and low reflection are different properties. Low transmission limits light passing through the tape, while low reflectance limits light reflected from its surface.
Specify visible, UV or near-infrared requirements separately. A tape that appears opaque to the eye may behave differently at a sensor's operating wavelength.
For demanding applications, define optical density or transmission, reflectance, gloss and allowable pinholes. Evaluate the finished construction after heat exposure and aging where relevant.
A black die-cut frame must also fit the assembly correctly. Gaps, exposed edges and placement errors can create light leakage even when the film itself meets the optical requirement.
6. Temperature and Processing
The available temperature-resistance range is 180–220°C for the confirmed PET silicone product family.
Confirm the actual part temperature, exposure time, heating cycles and removal conditions for the selected grade. This range does not establish continuous service at 220°C, 200°C for 24 hours or a universal 30-minute rating.
Optical properties and adhesive behavior must remain suitable after the required process. Heat resistance alone does not establish camera-module cleanliness or display compatibility.
For soldering profiles exceeding the confirmed PET capability, select a separately qualified construction. Do not assume compatibility with a 260°C solder bath.
7. Application Industries and Scenarios
Camera and Optical Modules
Selected light-blocking frames and strips can shield localized areas or support temporary assembly protection. Confirm wavelength, reflectance, cleanliness and residue requirements.
Displays and Backlights
Use suitable constructions for edge masking, localized light shielding and process protection. Permanent installation requires additional adhesion, aging and outgassing evaluation.
PCB and Electronics Processing
Protect selected areas during compatible coating or heating operations. Confirm process temperature, chemistry, electrical requirements and silicone-transfer sensitivity.
Powder Coating and Metal Finishing
Mask designated contact faces and assembly areas during suitable oven-curing processes. Check edge lifting, coating boundaries and post-process removal.
Automotive Components
Support appearance masking and selected protection around dark-colored parts. Confirm paint chemistry, substrate and curing conditions.
Machine-Vision Fixtures
Selected matte-black versions can provide dark reference areas. Validate contrast and reflectance with the actual camera, lighting and wavelength; the tape is not automatically a laser-protection material.
8. Application Procedure
Define whether the tape will be removed after processing or remain in the assembly.
Clean and dry the substrate using a compatible method. Avoid contaminating the adhesive and optical surfaces during handling.
Apply with uniform pressure and without excessive stretching. Check frame alignment, corners and edges for gaps or lifting.
Run samples through the full production cycle. Inspect dimensional change, optical performance, adhesive transfer and surface condition.
Remove temporary masks at the validated temperature, angle and speed. For permanent parts, evaluate holding, aging and edge lift under expected service conditions.
9. Adhesion, Electrical and Contamination Requirements
Peel adhesion does not by itself establish permanent holding. For installed frames or strips, evaluate shear, creep and resistance to lifting around bends.
Black color does not prove either electrical insulation or conductivity. Confirm finished-tape dielectric or resistance performance according to the intended application.
ESD or low-static versions may be requested. These require separate assessment of resistance and charge generation during unwinding and removal.
For optical assemblies, specify particle, volatile and surface-transfer limits where needed. Silicone adhesive may be unsuitable for some downstream coating or bonding processes unless compatibility is demonstrated.
Low-outgassing, low-static and special optical versions are subject to specification and model confirmation.
10. Comparison and Selection Guide
Black PET and Black Polyimide Tape
Choose using the actual backing, temperature profile and mechanical requirements. Similar color does not make the constructions interchangeable.
Light-Blocking and ESD Versions
Choose optical performance for light control and a separately evaluated electrical construction for static control. One property does not imply the other.
Matte and Gloss Finishes
Select matte for specified glare or reflectance control. Select gloss where the required appearance and process permit it.
Thin and Thick Constructions
Select thickness using assembly clearance, handling strength and adhesion requirements. A thicker solid PET tape does not provide the cushioning behavior of foam.
Rolls and Die-Cut Frames
Rolls suit variable-length masking. Liner-backed frames and shapes support repeated geometry and controlled placement.
11. Handling and Storage
Store in original packaging in a clean, dry environment, protected from direct sunlight and contamination. Follow the storage conditions and shelf life confirmed for the selected grade.
Protect exposed adhesive and optical surfaces. Confirm liner release and packaging for delicate frames or automated placement.
Retain the model and batch identification when validating optical, thermal or electrical performance so that production material matches the approved construction.
