Equipment Overview
The main oil pump impeller is the core rotating component for oil pressurization and delivery of the main oil pump. It is rigidly connected to the pump shaft via key joint and directly driven by the turbine main shaft (rated speed: 3000 r/min), installed inside the main oil pump housing.
Driven by high-speed rotation to generate centrifugal force, it converts low-pressure turbine oil supplied by the oil ejector into high-pressure oil flow, acting as the "power source" for the main oil pump to supply oil to bearings, governing system and protection devices.
As the key component for energy conversion of the main oil pump, the structural precision and material performance of the impeller directly determine the stability of oil supply pressure, flow compliance and operating efficiency, and play a decisive role in lubrication reliability and safety protection of the steam turbine unit.
Core Functions and Working Principle
Core Functions:
  • Pressurization & Delivery: Convert low-pressure oil (positive-pressure suction provided by oil ejector) into high-pressure oil meeting system requirements through high-speed rotation, to guarantee pressure oil supply for bearing lubrication, governing system and protection devices.
  • Flow Control: Precisely regulate oil output by blade structural design to satisfy total demand of lubricating oil (for bearing cooling) and governing oil (for driving governing mechanism) under full-speed unit operation (flow range: 270 m³/h ~ 3000 L/min).
Working Principle:
When the impeller rotates at high speed together with the pump shaft, blades drive oil to perform circular motion. Under centrifugal force, oil is thrown from impeller hub toward outer rim at high velocity to form high-pressure oil flow delivered to the system. Meanwhile, negative pressure is formed at impeller center due to oil outflow, which continuously draws in low-pressure oil from the oil ejector. A continuous cycle of "suction-pressurization-discharge" is established to realize stable oil supply of the main oil pump.
Structural Features & Material Selection
Structural Design: Closed-type impeller is widely adopted, consisting of hub, blades, front cover plate and rear cover plate. Symmetrically-arranged blades ensure uniform force distribution. Smooth flow passages reduce oil flow resistance and stabilize pressure output.
Material Matching: High-strength alloy materials (e.g. 2Cr13 stainless steel) are selected according to service conditions. Featuring good wear resistance, cavitation resistance and mechanical strength, the material can withstand long-term impact from turbine-oil medium and high-speed rotational stress.
Overhaul Standards & Quality Requirements
Impeller overhaul is the core procedure of main oil pump maintenance. Strict standards shall be followed as below:
Inspection Type Requirements
Visual Inspection No cracks, cavitation pits (pit depth ≤0.3 mm), corrosion or blade deformation on surfaces. No curling or chipping on edges, to avoid pressure fluctuation caused by turbulent oil flow.
Key-slot Fit For key connection between impeller and pump shaft: lateral clearance between key and key-slot: 0.02~0.03 mm; top clearance: 0.35~0.5 mm; interference fit between key and slot: 0~0.01 mm, to guarantee loosening-free power transmission.
Rotor Precision After assembly of impeller and pump shaft, total rotor run-out ≤0.03 mm, concentricity error ≤0.02 mm, to prevent rubbing against pump housing or abnormal vibration during rotation.
Cleanliness Requirement Thoroughly remove oil sludge and debris inside flow passages during overhaul, to avoid component abrasion or oil-circuit blockage caused by particulate contaminants entering the system.
Replacement Criteria: Impeller must be replaced if cracks, severe cavitation (pit depth>0.5 mm) or blade deformation occur, so as to guarantee qualified oil-supply performance.
Significance & Associated Impacts
Impeller performance directly governs the reliability of main oil pump:
  • Worn or unbalanced impeller will trigger outlet-pressure fluctuation, impair bearing lubrication (potential abrasion risk) and governing-system response accuracy (resulting in load fluctuation).
  • Impeller failure may lead to oil-supply interruption and activate unit protection trip. Therefore, its quality is the core prerequisite for realizing "independent oil supply" under full-speed turbine operation.
