| High Light | Quarter-turn actuator 3000 Nm torque ,AC220V DC24V butterfly valve actuator ,ISO 5211 compact valve actuator | ||
Ball valves, butterfly valves and dampers share one motion: a 90-degree rotation. This quarter-turn electric actuator converts that motion into dependable automation with 50–3000 Nm of torque, an ISO 5211 standard mounting, and AC220V or DC24V power options. It is the practical choice for HVAC plants, water networks and process lines where valves must open, close and report position on command.
Quarter-turn valves feel easy to operate by hand at DN50, but at DN200 and above the lever force becomes heavy, the disc position becomes hard to judge, and automated plants cannot afford an operator walking valve to valve. Unlike rising-stem valves, ball and butterfly valves need only a 90° rotation — but they need it fast, with high breakaway torque and precise stopping at both ends. A quarter-turn actuator matches that duty exactly, with no oversized gearbox and no wasted energy.
Beyond labor savings, automation removes human error from critical sequences: pump start interlocks, tank overfill protection, and fire or emergency isolation all depend on valves that move when the control system says so. The table below compares four operating conditions where manual or wrong-type actuation typically fails.
| Operating Condition | Typical Pain Point | Risk If Left Unattended | How This Actuator Helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Large butterfly valves (DN200–DN600) operated by lever or gearbox | High manual effort, slow operation, poor position visibility | Valves left partially open; water hammer during abrupt closure | Motorized 90° stroke with adjustable open/close speed and repeatable seating |
| HVAC chilled water and condenser loops tied to BMS | No remote state, no interlock with pumps and chillers | Energy waste, coil freezing, uncoordinated plant sequences | BMS-ready control with end-of-travel feedback and optional 4–20 mA position signal |
| Valves operated many times per day in treatment or dosing lines | Manual cycling consumes operator time and is inconsistent | Process deviations, missed cycles, fatigue errors | Rated for frequent duty with thermally protected motor and self-locking drive |
| Outdoor installations exposed to rain, dust and temperature swings | Corrosion of drive train, water in terminal box, stiff seals | Premature failure and unplanned downtime | IP67 sealed aluminum housing with corrosion-resistant coating and heater option |
A permanently lubricated motor drives a multi-stage gear train that multiplies torque down to the output drive. The output drive, available as a female square, female keyway or threaded bushing per ISO 5211, engages the valve stem and rotates it exactly 90 degrees from open to closed. Cam-operated limit switches are adjusted at the factory to stop the drive at the precise seating positions, while an independent torque switch protects the valve if an obstruction or seat wear increases resistance beyond the set value.
The self-locking gear design holds the valve position when the motor stops, so ball and butterfly valves stay put without a brake. A large local position indicator shows open or closed status at a glance, and the optional declutchable handwheel or hexagonal manual override lets operators move the valve during commissioning or power loss. Electrical connections are made in a separate terminal compartment, keeping live wiring away from the gear chamber during maintenance.
The torque a quarter-turn actuator must deliver is highest at breakaway, when the disc or ball unseats from the seat. Use the valve manufacturer's breakaway torque and apply a safety factor of 1.3 for clean media, or 1.5 for media with deposits. Next, confirm the ISO 5211 flange dimension and the valve stem drive type: female square is most common for butterfly valves, while ball valves often use a keyed or splined drive. Finally, decide the power supply — AC220V for permanent plant power, DC24V where battery-backed or low-voltage control is preferred.
| Typical Valve Size | Recommended Torque Class | Suggested Model |
|---|---|---|
| DN50 – DN100 ball valve / DN50 – DN150 butterfly valve | 50 – 150 Nm | QW-DMT155-01 |
| DN125 – DN200 ball valve / DN200 – DN300 butterfly valve | 300 – 800 Nm | QW-DMT155-02 |
| DN250 – DN350 ball valve / DN350 – DN500 butterfly valve | 1000 – 2000 Nm | QW-DMT155-03 |
| DN400+ ball valve / DN500 – DN600 butterfly valve | 2000 – 3000 Nm | QW-DMT155-04 |

Use the valve manufacturer's breakaway torque at your working pressure differential and multiply by a safety factor of at least 1.3. Butterfly valves usually need the highest torque at the moment of unseating, after which running torque drops. If the nameplate data is missing, provide the valve size, type (wafer or lug), pressure rating and media, and our engineers will recommend a torque class. Bear in mind that soft-seated valves have different breakaway behavior than metal-seated valves, and that media deposits raise friction over time. A correctly sized actuator seats the valve fully without straining the gear train.
Yes. The open and closed positions are set by adjustable cams that actuate the limit switches. At the factory, travel is set to a standard 90 degrees, and during commissioning your technician can fine-tune both end positions without opening the sealed gear chamber on most models. This is useful when the valve manufacturer specifies an over-travel of a few degrees for tight shutoff, or when the valve stop differs slightly from the nominal angle. We supply the adjustment procedure in the manual, and our support team can guide your technician remotely if needed.
Choose AC220V when the valve is in a plant with stable mains power and standard motor control, because installation cost is lowest and control panels are conventional. Choose DC24V when the site has no reliable mains, when battery backup is required for fail-safe operation, or when the control system already operates at low voltage. DC versions are also easier to integrate with solar power in remote pumping stations. Consider that DC actuators draw higher current than AC equivalents for the same torque, so cable sizing matters. Tell us your site power situation and we will configure the correct motor and control board.
The standard on/off version is designed for open/close duty, but the series can be supplied with a 4–20 mA positioner for slow modulating service such as flow balancing or level trimming. For true proportional control with frequent reversals, we recommend the modulating version with a duty-rated motor and position feedback loop. If your process needs continuous adjustment rather than occasional throttling, describe the required resolution and cycle frequency, and we will propose the appropriate control option. Using an on/off actuator for frequent throttling will overheat the motor and shorten gear life.
First confirm the ISO 5211 flange drilling on the valve top and the stem drive shape, because the actuator output bushing must engage the stem exactly. Common drives are female square, female keyway and splined. Measure the stem protrusion height above the flange to ensure full engagement. Our mounting kits include the flange adapter, drive bushing and coupling for common valve brands. During retrofit, check that the valve operates freely through its full travel before mounting the actuator. If you send the valve make, size and a photo of the top flange, we will confirm the kit part number.
Service life depends on duty, but the design targets are: gear train rated for over 100,000 operations, motor thermally protected against overload, and IP67 enclosure that keeps out dust and hose-directed water. In outdoor service, the main aging factors are seal condition and internal condensation, so we offer an anti-condensation heater for humid climates and recommend a yearly inspection of cable glands and O-rings. For coastal installations, the polyester powder coating resists salt corrosion, but periodic washing is good practice. With basic maintenance, these actuators typically serve 8–10 years in HVAC and water duty.
QINWEIYB is a manufacturer, not a trader: we engineer, assemble and test every quarter-turn actuator in our own ISO 9001 certified plant. Each unit is torque-tested and stroke-cycled before dispatch, and the test certificate travels with the product. You get direct factory support for sizing, mounting kits and spares, plus a warranty that covers manufacturing defects. From a single replacement valve to a standardized actuator program across several plants, our engineers respond with practical recommendations within one working day.
