R-Lipoic acid, also known as dextrorotatory lipoic acid, is a dextrorotatory sulfur-containing vitamin. It appears as a white or pale yellow, odorless powder or crystals with an optical rotation of +104° and is insoluble in water. It must be stored in a sealed, light-protected, low-temperature, and dry environment. This substance, as a vitamin, can also be added to functional foods. Chemical synthesis is mainly achieved through processes such as thiolation, cyclization, and resolution. However, existing preparation methods suffer from low resolution yields and poor byproduct utilization, resulting in high production costs.
Powerful Antioxidant and Free Radical Scavenger: R-lipoic acid directly neutralizes reactive oxygen species that damage DNA, proteins, and cellular lipids. Its reduced form, dihydrolipoic acid, can also regenerate other antioxidants such as vitamin C and glutathione.
Chondrating Metal Ions and Anti-aging: R-lipoic acid is a potent chelator of divalent metal ions, reversing age-related iron accumulation in the cerebral cortex of aged rats and reducing oxidative stress.
Regulating Glucose and Lipid Metabolism and Improving Diabetes: R-lipoic acid inhibits fatty acid oxidation. It can also improve blood glucose levels in patients with metabolic disorders and is used to control weight in obese individuals.
